Poverty.

Poverty is hunger. Poverty is lack of shelter. Poverty is being sick and not being able to see a doctor. Poverty is not having access to school and not knowing how to read. Poverty is not having a job, is fear for the future, living one day at a time. Poverty is losing a child to illness brought about by unclean water. Poverty is powerlessness, lack of representation and freedom. Poverty has many faces, changing from place to place and across time, and has been described in many ways. Most often, poverty is a situation people want to escape. So poverty is a call to action -- for the poor and the wealthy alike -- a call to change the world so that many more may have enough to eat, adequate shelter, access to education and health, protection from violence, and a voice in what happens in their communities.

Mr Tong's lecture today was rather inspiring and yet again, I've realised that there are much more useful materials in websites like YouTube. Its not all about Japanese toilet tricks, webcam girls and music videos. There are videos uploaded in there that are targeted at internet users to send certain messages across to the masses and to gain support for things like making poverty history.

Almost half of the world's 6 billion people live on less than two dollars a day. I didn't really care about those malnutrition kids in Africa and all but somehow the lecture today struck me that in the world that we're living in now, there are actually millions or even billions of people who are extremely poor and are desperate for food and water, things that we take advantage of everyday. We sometimes say "Don't waste food lah. Think of the people in Africa!" But do we really mean it? Perhaps for some, they do. But for the majority I presume, don't. I don't know. Maybe we could all work together and do something?

Idealistic, that is, I feel.

Teenagers will be teenagers. I'm sure you can identify with her.

Eradicating poverty is not easy but the UN is targeting the 2015 to be the year where extreme poverty would be eradicated. How will this change the world? Will the world be a better place if poverty was eradicated? We can only remain sanguine. Poverty is being fought for by eminent world leaders like Bill Clinton and popular celebrity activists like Bono et cetera. The unprecedented power of youth in the world today has also been targeted to eradicate poverty as youth, skillfully armed with alternative media like the internet, can really make a difference.

You can make a difference too. Do Something Real.

The Condemned.

condemned

10 people will fight, 9 people will die and you'll get to watch it live.

Yes, this is what the movie is about. A rich television producer created this idea of putting 10 death-sentenced killers on an island where they will fight it out amongst one another so that the sole survivor will be freed and receives a rewarding prize money. They have a time limit and so on which makes it even tougher and the 10 killers come from different countries to attract viewers from all over the globe.

What's interesting is that as they fight on the island, cameras are placed almost everywhere on the island to capture what they are doing. So, it becomes like reality TV, just that this is really reality. Internet users just have to subscribe to the live website by using their credit cards and they'll get to view the action live. As the show progressed, more and more people signed up, reaching even 40 million.

condemned1

One of the condemned killers running away after blasting one of her enemies up.

condemned2

American vs Japanese.

This movie is a must-watch for those who love action and violence. It's not just action with no plot. And come to think of it, who are the people who are condemned? Is it the killers on the island or the people who subscribe to the live website, giving television producers the lucrative incentive to come up with such ideas that will entertain the masses but deteriorate our morals. I shall not elaborate on what happened on the island so that it will not spoil the show. Go catch it now, The Condemned.

HC Room, The Place To Be.

Remember the House Com room incident? Here is the evidence.

DSC02361

DSC02360

I heard the teachers had to hammer the metal thing to fit the padlock into it.

Now I'm totally banned from stepping into the room, which I would gladly call my second home. But luckily I only have like a few weeks left in school and A levels is coming so at least I won't slack in the room anymore.

Anyway, the room has been of much use to me for my whole 2 years in JC. It has been the best place to hide, sleep, enjoy aircon and many more! Seriously, without it, my life in JC wouldn't be the same at all.

Many things happened in there before. The stuff we did in there. Unthinkable. Sleep-overs. Food. Drinks. Ball games. Everything that weren't allowed. It's the one place that I will think of when I look back into my JC days in the future.

Not forgetting all the HC people who used the room as often as I did. And those that stayed over to climb _____ and drank _______.

HC Room, the place to be. But I guess it's all going to change now. My batch was probably the worst HC batch ever. With stricter rules and different leaders now, guess the HC room won't be like it used to be under the 14th House Committee.

I'm going to miss the room. And sorry to the all HC members for getting the room locked till 23rd September. Haha don't worry it wont happen again. I'm banned from that place FOREVER! (or maybe not). Just KIDDING.

Hope you had a great birthday!

EARTHQUAKE!

Did you feel the tremor? Many people felt it actually but i didn't feel anything. Haha. It was an 8.4 Richter Earthquake that hit Bengkulu, Indonesia and Padang, the largest yet this year. Almost half of Bengkulu had been destroyed, even their hospital.

What is going to become of Singapore? Indonesia is the country that is being hit most with Earthquakes and Singapore is just her neighbour. Luckily, Singapore's buildings are stable enough not to collapse. I don't wanna die so early. Still haven't enjoyed life to the fullest yet! Natural disasters are scary. Probably even capable of destroying the only place we live in. Have you ever thought what it would be if the Earth was destroyed and there was nothing left in this universe? No humans. No Earth. No Nothing. Only other planets, with no other living things (Or is there?). I think it's a frightening thought. With really NOTHING left. It practically means NOTHING with NOTHING existing anymore.

Haha there's a natural disaster for you.

Britney's Comeback (:

The Brand-New Britney. Enjoy! Gimme More!

Ok enough nonsense. This is more serious work. It explains why her performance had sucked so much in VMA 2007.

Mix & Match

Sorry for the lack of photos. The cable connection between my handphone and computer is screwed currently. But here's a photo for you.

This is Eva. My niece. Full Name Eva Akil Tan Yi Ling. Made her first cry on 3rd April. Haha she loves pouting and sticking out her tongue. I wonder how she'll look like when she grows older. Mixed-blood, Chinese and Malay. My children would be mixed too. Lol. And my cousins have chinese partners too. Think my family line will not continue being Malay anymore. Slowly mixing. Mixing is good. Adds variety and diversifies. Haha.

And here's a photo of me and my closer cousins. Had an outing just recently cause Hazmi got to enlist into NS soon. My turn will come soon in a few months' time.

Oh by the way, Technorati.com is very useful if you want to check out anyone who has been blogging about you. It's simple. First, go to technorati.com. Then, at the posts search, just type your name. But usually many posts will appear because many people share the same name. So, just type something like " Your Name, Your School ". That'll narrow down alot of posts for you and you can find interesting posts about yourselves. At least I found some on me. And it makes blogging even more unsafe. So becareful what you say in blogs if you don't want it to be seen. Technorati.com, the ultimate blog search engine.

There's no school tomorrow cause i have no paper tomorrow. Finally got a day to rest after the arduous 6-paper marathon in 3 days. Hope i don't rest too much till I slack. Next day Physics Paper. Can't wait for end of prelims. End of A Levels. Reach legal 18. Party. Freedom. Time. Space.

pee-ai-ass-ass-ee-dee.

Prelims 2007. Halfway through. Feel so much more relieved but the latest two papers were the worst so far for me, Economics and Chemistry. Will not go into detail about the papers.

Anyway what's really pissing me off is that I have been getting into trouble since Monday, the start of prelims till today, halfway through prelims.

Monday: Was caught with long hair (the back and sideburns)

Tuesday: Supposed to report to Mr Tong but he wasn't free so Mr Ng (I think) took over his job and this time he said my fringe was too long and asked me to comb it up.

Wednesday: Got caught skipping morning assembly in the HC room just when assembly was over. By Mr Ng yet again who then passed on the message to Mr Tong. Got talked to by Mr Tong after Chem Paper (which I think I screwed up) and was asked to cut my fringe because Mr Ng noted "front still long" on the paper.

I'm not blaming the teachers or anyone else but myself.

Why did I keep long hair in the first place, especially on the first day of exams when I knew that Mr Tong was going to do a spot-check. Thought of using my jacket to cover but it failed. Damn stupid of me. That was just the first thing that went wrong during the prelims and that sparked off the other problems that has really started to piss me off. And I seriously didn't know why I was so stupid to stay in the HC room again during morning assembly. This is not the first but second time already and so my apology letter is like twice the length. Haha.

Can't wait to get prelims over and done with anyway. Results? Not too excited about getting them back. But now after prelims, the criminals got to meet Mr Tong because he has stuff for us to do to repay back for our actions. I just hope it won't take up too much of my time.

Major Criminals: Keng Mun, Shaik, Robin and Me.

Minor Criminals: Martin and Dave.

Heard from Shaik that fasting month starts tomorrow. Haha. Happy fasting to all MUSLIMS! A time for "us" to slim down.

New Word #1

1.dry-humping

514 up, 34 down

dry humping is the process of two people repeatedly moving up and down and back and forth on top of each other fully clothed( or missing various pieces, but the penis must not come in contact with the vagina with out some sort of fabric separating them ex: boxers, panties, or even sheets!!)

Example from Urban Dictionary (NOT AN EXAMPLE FROM ME): I will dry hump anybody if they're cute enough!!

(Thanks to Wendy who reminded me of Urban Dictionary's existence).

Are You Afraid?

Past midnight and there we were, mugging away in Downtown East's Macdonald's. It was a little unexpected for me cause I thought I'd be studying only till the last bus arrived but I ended up studying until 4am before Shaik's brother sent me home.

It was an eventful one somehow. We talked about TJC Post Prom that could be held at Gotham Penthouse with male exotic dancers (strippers). Graham and I were like, what the hell for? But Shaik seemed quite interested and said "Since it's free, why not?" Haha. Typical Singaporean. Or is it not? Perhaps free stuff are enticing. Or maybe Shaik is just gay? Haha I'm just kidding. I can clearly prove that he's straight because he talked about his fantasies (ehem!) in Facebook. Heard that it's popularity is rising and that there are many games in there that makes people addicted to it. Probably going to take a peek into it only after my Prelims. Yes, back to Shaik, he.... (Nevermind, I shall not publicise him too much).

Somehow we were on the topic of sex, or dry-humping (a term in Facebook), whatever that is. And that sparked off the conversation about ghost stories. Graham remembered a story about TJC's school library's toilet that is on the second floor. For those of you who don't know, it's actually located deeper into the Biology section I think and the two toilets are actually out of bounds to students. Jonathan Ong said it was a nice place to make out. Haha. I'm sure, but yesterday, Graham said it was haunted. A few TA students had gone in to throw wet tissues into the cubicle and later when they opened it they saw the tissues all set aside nicely next to the door. Freaky? What do you think? Go check the toilet out and tell me if anything else happens. Could be interesting. And I really wonder why the two toilets on the second floor are out of bounds. I've gone in before to pee and it's still in good condition.

Next came Shaik's story. He was cycling with Khairul, a friend of ours. Suddenly, Khairul told them to stop immediately and make a U-turn. Later he explained that there was a head looking straight at them. Sounds like a simple story but why do some people see such supernatural things so often? Are they gifted with a certain power? The power to see. The power to communicate. The power to feel. Feeling their presence might be a common thing that everyone experiences. But as Shaik said, it's probably the fear that was instilled in you that caused you to feel their presence. You've heard stories. You've seen pictures. And that's why you feel afraid. That's why you imagine things. What if you were brought up in a world, stuck in your own home without anyone telling you any ghost stories. Would you still be afraid? Afraid of the supernatural beings. As for me, I haven't seen such things before and so I cannot really believe such stories. But sometimes, I get a little scared when I'm alone in the dark and the place seems quite a little freaky. Maybe it's just because I think too much. Which I think I do. Maybe if I never heard such ghost stories before I wouldn't even be afraid. Who knows?

I shall not come to conclusions too fast though. It's up to you to believe what you want. If you believe they exist, then don't go over the limit and disturb them. If you don't believe they exist, then good for you. They probably won't even disturb you too. What do you think? Are you afraid?

Al-Jazeera

Just checked out on YouTube on certain videos uploaded by Al-Jazeera, a News & Satellite TV Network from Qatar. Realised there are many other interesting things you can watch in YouTube other than those funny stuff and music videos people generally watch.

Al-Jazeera is one of the power players in the media today. It's a channel where they aim to give a 360° view of the world today and the outrageous things that are happening globally. There are many things in there that will certainly stir up your feelings and might even alter the way you look at life. It's scary. The crazy things happening in the world today. What's going to happen in the future? Wars? More innocent killings? One might just die anytime so I've decided to live life to the fullest.

Of course, Al-Jazeera have not been accepted so graciously by everyone ever since it launched in 1996 and now it even has Al-Jazeera English which was launched in 2007 (the launch can be searched on YouTube). Their news are rather uncensored and so it's quite frightening if you know what I mean. It gives people a wider perspective but it might not always be a good thing. Rumours has it that George Bush has considered bombing its headquarters to halt further broadcasts. I wonder what'll happen if that really comes true. Will they be fearful? Or will there be more retaliation? I'll lean more to the latter. What about you?

Alright, was just taking a break from mugging. Going to bury myself into my Economics notes very soon. Will go have a haircut later on (hope it will turn out fine) and probably go jogging around the neighbourhood.

Mugging to Stay Alive.

10am, library opens. and 5 minutes later, the library is full. That's Tampines Regional Library for you these past few days. I'm sure many other libraries are just the same. Is this what life is about in Singapore? All books, paper qualifications and nothing else? Perhaps many students would be nodding their head in agreement upon reading that. From 10am till evening, students sit rooted to their chairs flipping through papers and files, scratching their heads, and writing notes.

Wah damn stressful leh. Everyday study study study. SIAN!

Eh, I agree lah. But then no choice. Fail exams future sure gone.

Most of the things that we're studying now are useless when we step out into the world next time, even in the university. However, what we're studying for now is to open up opportunities in the future. Singapore, being small, and only its humans as its resources, don't really have much choice except to focus on education. This is probably how Singapore is surviving, being just a little red dot.

Singapore is not like the USA. USA, a land of opportunities and the home of the brave, there are multitudinous possibilities to what you can do. (credits to my self-appointed editor. Haha) It's true. The market there is so big that even selling rubber bands or safety pins could earn you your living. Interested to live a simple life? Look overseas then. Somewhere other than Singapore would be the right place for you.

My Prelims is just two days away and I really am not looking forward to it. I've done quite a bit of studying but still not confident. Not a good feeling. Would really love to get scholarships for tertiary education. Not being greedy or what, but if I can get a scholarship, why not? You won't know unless you try. And I can even save my parents' money for more useful stuff in the future.

There's loud Malay Rock music playing at void deck now. Some Malay Wedding is going on. Congrats to the couple. May they live happily together forever.

Back to Blogging? Maybe.

Media: Transformers.

3 days left to prelims and i just came to realise that gp is one hell of an interesting subject. anyway, if the mass media question that comes out is rather easy, i'll have a go at it. here are some of my thoughts on the mass media.

The Mass Media: Transformers.

From old media to new media, the way people disseminate information to one another has definitely transformed into a more complex style. The internet, something that's common to everyone of you out there (if not you won't probably be reading my blog), is the in-thing and it's exponential growth of content and such is just amazing. Is the internet going to kill all other forms of media?

It totally depends. Depends where you are. Depends what kind of information. The internet has given people the power to connect globally and be their own star. Time Magazine's Person of the Year 2006 is "You". Yes, You, reading my blog right now. You are the spectator, inventor and innovator of the internet. Without You, would the internet still be what it is today? It's You who shapes it this way. It's You who contribute to the tons and tons of information available on the net. Wikipedia has lots of information and I'm sure many of You use that to research on Project Work or any other work. All these information actually comes from your fellow "You"s from all over the world. These empowered individual get to share photos, information and ANYTHING or WHATEVER in the internet. YouTube allows the sharing of videos. Its counterpart, PornoTube has allowed the sharing of adult videos. Now even amateurs have no problem getting what they want!

It seems that the internet is going to make the newspaper obsolete. What do you think? It probably won't because newspapers are also adjusting to the new age of New Media. The Straits Times has introduced STOMP! to encourage more citizen participation and reduce professional journalism. This is just a step that they have taken. Newspapers are still common in Singapore but the internet is becoming a more accessible option for people who are especially computer literate.

The shift from old to new media is a very interesting one. Rupert Murdoch, the CEO of News Corp, USA, is a 75-year-old man that sees trends and is able to allows his industries to adapt to them to suit the needs of the new generation. He is definite a Power Player in the world of media today. 20th Century Fox and Star TV are under him.

The internet has not come about without limitations and restrictions. The Great Firewall of China has blocked off many internet sites. For example, the Google incident where the Chinese government filtered search results about the Falun Gong sect and Tiananmen Square. Sometimes it is inevitable to restrict such free forms of media to protect the nation.

There are many things about the media that you probably do not know but trust me, it's more than meets the eye and it's certainly worth reading up on. I think my points up there are very disjointed so please forgive me. Just typed everything that came into mind.

Anyway it's getting real late, its 2am now and i still got a lot of studying left to do. 3 days left to prelims. Monday- General Paper and Physics Paper 3.

All the best to everyone taking their prelims!

I might seriously come back to blogging so, watch out for more of me.

See Ya!
